Repair or replace? How to tell
The single most common thing we get called out for is a “failed” sail that actually just has failed stitching. The sailcloth itself usually lasts a long time — it’s the thread that goes first, because a lot of sails were originally made with standard polyester stitching that simply breaks down in the Queensland sun after a few years.
Here’s the quick guide:
• Stitching has come away but the fabric is sound — almost always repairable. We re-stitch with long-life thread and it looks like new.
• Small tear at a corner or edge — usually repairable, especially if caught early.
• Sail is sagging or flapping — often just needs re-tensioning, not replacing.
• Fabric is badly faded, brittle, or torn through the middle — this is where replacement is the better value, and we’ll tell you so honestly.
An on-site inspection is the only way to know for sure, and we’ll always tell you straight whether a repair makes sense or whether you’d be throwing good money after bad.

Re-stitching
This is our specialty. We remove the sail, re-stitch it with long-life thread that’s designed to last around 10 years (the older thread it replaces often failed in 3–5), and re-install it. While the sail is down we also pressure-clean it, so it goes back up looking close to new. Typical turnaround is around 1–1.5 weeks.
Re-tensioning
Sails stretch and settle over time, and a loose sail flaps, collects water, and wears faster. Re-tensioning tightens everything back to spec and can dramatically extend the life of the sail — a cheap fix that prevents bigger problems.
Tears, eyelets & hardware
We repair torn seams, replace damaged stainless steel eyelets, and sort out the corner fittings and wire systems that take the load. Catching these early stops a small problem becoming a full replacement.
Cleaning & maintenance
Light-coloured sails in particular collect dust and grime that’s easy to see. Removing, pressure-cleaning and re-installing brings the colour back and clears anything that traps moisture and shortens the sail’s life.
Storm damage & insurance repairs
Storm season on the Gold Coast does real damage to shade sails, and a lot of it is covered by home and contents insurance. We do insurance repair work regularly and we know how the process runs, which makes it far less stressful for you:
• We can take the damaged sail down straight away — so it’s not causing further damage — and store it while you wait for your insurer’s approval.
• We prepare quotes with the detail and wording insurers actually need, which matters: a vague quote is one of the most common reasons a claim gets held up or knocked back.
• Once your claim is approved, we carry out the repair or replacement and get your outdoor area back to normal.

Usually not. Sagging is most often a tension issue, and re-tensioning is one of the cheapest, quickest fixes we do. Left alone though, a loose sail flaps and wears out faster, so it’s worth sorting early.

A re-stitch typically takes around 1 to 1.5 weeks from when we remove the sail, as it includes pressure-cleaning before re-installation. On-site fixes like re-tensioning are much quicker.
If the sailcloth is still in good condition and only the stitching, tension or a corner fitting has failed, repairing is almost always better value. If the fabric itself is faded, brittle or torn through, replacement is the smarter spend. We’ll assess it honestly and tell you which way to go.
It depends on the size of the sail and what’s wrong with it — a simple re-tension is at the low end, a full re-stitch is more, and both are well below the cost of a new sail. The only way to give you an accurate price is a quick inspection, which is free. As a rule of thumb, if the fabric is still sound, repairing is significantly cheaper than replacing.
